Our Ingredients
Ginger Extract Flavor
Utilizing the cleanest label taste solution, our ginger is extracted using only water. Ginger can be a spicy flavor, which some people love and makes other run away. We wanted a flavor that would compliment our cranberry flavor, and an additional kick. It had to be subtle, and not overpower the other tastes.
Lime Juice Concentrate
Limes add a bright and tangy flavor to our beverage, and make up a large percentage of the natural sweeteners in our drink.
Cranberry Juice WONF
We source the highest quality Cranberry Ginger for our primary flavor. WONF (With Other Natural Sources), is a labeling term indicating that a product's flavor comes primarily from a named natural source, but also includes other natural flavor ingredients to create a fuller, more complex, or more cost-effective taste profile.
Why we use Cranberries
Cranberries are rich in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, which combat oxidative stress and protect cells from damage. They also contain vitamins C and E, as well as antioxidants, which boost the immune system and help fight off infections. For those concerned with reducing plaque and gum inflammation, Cranberries have antibacterial and astringent properties.
Ginger is a spice with numerous potential health benefits, supported by scientific research.Ginger contains compounds called gingerols and shogaols, which have potent anti-inflammatory effects. They can help reduce pain, swelling, and arthritis symptoms. Ginger may help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. It may also improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity. Ginger is rich in antioxidants, which protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Why use Lime
Allulose
D- Psicose (C6H1206), also know as D-allulose or simply allulose is an epimer of fructose that is used by some commercial food and beverage manufacturers as a low-calorie sweetener. Allulose occurs naturally in small quantities in a variety of foods. It was first identified in the 1940s, although the enzymes needed to produce it on an industrial scale were not discovered until the 1990s. Studies have shown the commercial product is not absorbed in the human body the way common sugars are and does not raise insulin levels, but more testing may be needed to evaluate any other potential side effects. Tree below zero was an early adopter of allulose in 2021. You can expect to hear more about this sweetener in the future.
In 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted a petition for generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for allulose as a sugar substitute in various specified food categories. Because it is absorbed and metabolized differently from other sugars, the FDA has exempted allulose from the listing of total and added sugars on the Nutrition and supplement Facts labels,
Why haven't I heard of it?
Steviol Glycosides,
Our first formulation of Tree Below Zero was sweetened with 100% cane sugar, but the result was a drink with 100 calories and 24 grams of sugar. In early formulations we resisted sweeteners like Stevia because its taste has a slower onset and longer duration than sugar, and at high concentrations some of its extracts may have an aftertaste that many consumers do not enjoy. In our current formulation we use a proprietary blend of three sweeteners, making the quantity of stevia in a serving too small to have the unwanted aftertaste associated with it.
Why add Stevia now?
otherwise known as Stevia, is a sweet sugar substitute that is about 50 to 300 time sweeter than sugar. It is extracted from the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana. The active compounds in stevia are Steviol glycosides. Humans cannot metabolize the glycosides in stevia, and it therefore has zero calories.
Cane Sugar
Minimal health benefits are associated with cane sugar. Less-refined sugar cane juice contains trace amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, the health risks of overconsumption are significant for all added sugars.
In a healthy drink?
The reason we chose to add sugar is two fold, the quantity is small (4.7grams), and the taste. There is no denying that sugar tastes great, but unfortunately it has severe health consequences when over consumed. We want to help reduce that consumption, but still provide you with a great tasting drink.
Citric Acid
Not just any acid
An organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. It has several potential health benefits, but it also helps with weight management by promoting feelings of fullness.
Citric acid has many benefits like antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, it may enhance immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells. In addition Citric acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that can help exfoliate dead skin cells and improve skin texture. It is however important to note that the acid can cause stomach irritation in some individuals and excessive consumption can lead to enamel erosion in teeth, therefore it's recommended to consume in moderation.
Among various metrics, TDS measurement is a simple yet powerful way to assess how pure your drinking water is. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. Excessive or insufficient TDS levels can impact the taste and health quality of drinking water.
Water
Our water is sourced from the Columbia River in Washington State and we measure the quality before production. We test TDS and pH to look at coliform bacteria, Nitrates and PH level.
